I’m letting you know, because everyone I follow is moving to Substack, and I’m hoping that the more content creators complain the more something will be done about it. Please ask Substack to allow PayPal. I used it for years on Patreon and I’ve lost almost all my paid subscriptions because everyone is moving to Substack, and Substack only accepts credit cards of which I don’t have.
Perhaps shamefully, I can’t remember what I’m paying now for your content. That said, I’d pay double in a second. Easily my top three pods. And I can’t stand ads—yuck.
You get my Wapo cancellation dollars. I think if the model had not given me the amount of free content that it had I wouldn't have been able to be convinced to hand over the$$. So I'd say the model you're using is working, and the free content through Spotify etc gives me the ability to share to non subscribers
I appreciate the free content, and I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I just want to say that using Substack to listen to podcasts is drastically less convenient than using my usual podcast player, and I'm confident that this is true for just about everyone.
My podcast app automatically checks for new episodes and downloads them, I can listen to them offline, and they're in the same place as all my other podcasts. I've never used Substack for audio, I have the app and yet I use a browser even for text content and comment threads, because the app is much worse. So I doubt it's great for audio..
I understand why you're going about it this way, driving up your subscription numbers has multiple obvious benefits I'm to you, and it's a perfectly reasonable offer. But let's not pretend that doing it this way makes more sense or benefits anyone but yourself..
It's a business and marketing decision, and there's nothing wrong with that, but please don't insult our intelligence by suggesting that this is a better way to reach your listeners.
Hi Dan, I was the same as I can control Spotify through Apple CarPlay when I’m driving but not Substack. I have just found that you can link Substack with Spotify or other podcast players. I found it in the subscription settings. Hope that helps!
If you look on the Substack webpage for this podcast episode, you might see options in the upper right corner of your screen to follow the pod in the podcast app you usually use. I was able to follow it through Apple podcasts. I think this works like being a primo for Blocked and Reported, which I think you might be.
Hello fellow primo! I actually recognize you name, though I'm not sure if it's from the weekly comments section or a shoutout or something.
BARpod is currently the only podcast I have a paid subscription to. I understand that if I became a paid subscriber to Uncomfortable Conversations then I would be able to add the feed to my podcast app (I use Podcast Republic on Android), but as I understand it there's no free feed for this content unless you're a paid subscriber.
That's kind of the whole point, to force / encourage people to subscribe on Substack and to engage on this platform (which I suppose we're currently doing, so it's working..)
Hey Josh! I’ve been paid subscriber for a long time.
Man, you’re the best. I don’t believe you need to make this types of PSA’s.
I wish you had more faith in a slower burn, incremental audience growth based on your absolute brilliance and also generosity. Obviously you might make more money for doing this episode but I believe your integrity for your company and profile would’ve been held in much higher regard if you hadn’t.
You referenced a single dollar as the best way to evaluate your supporter’s action but I’d say your worth is so much more than that.
But, I do confess, as someone who raises finance for feature films, I understand your call to action.
I’m more than happy to pay for my subscription to hear everything from you. In fact I pay to hear everything from you! And I don’t believe I’m subsidising someone else’s free content.
The love that I have for your ideas and conversations is the greatest asset you have.
Okay Josh, I'm here now, after freeloading for yonks. Looking forward to all the lovely content!
